Grilled Salmon with Lemon and Herbs – A Light, Flavourful Iftar Feast!

Assalamu Alaikum, my lovely readers! Ramadan Mubarak to you all! It’s Shahena here, your British Bengali mum of four from London, back with another quick and wholesome recipe that’s perfect for Iftar. Today, I’m sharing my Grilled Salmon with Lemon and Herbs – a dish that’s not only delicious and healthy but also incredibly easy to prepare.

Salmon is one of my go-to ingredients during Ramadan because it’s packed with protein, omega-3s, and so much flavour. This recipe is light yet satisfying, making it the perfect way to break your fast without feeling too heavy. The zesty lemon, fragrant herbs, and smoky grill marks take this dish to the next level. Even my little ones love it (and that’s a win in my book!). Whether you’re cooking for a crowd or just for yourself, this grilled salmon is sure to impress.

Grilled Salmon with Lemon and Herbs Recipe

Ingredients (Serves 4)

  • 4 salmon fillets (about 150g each)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • Zest and juice of 1 lemon
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tbsp fresh dill, chopped (or 1 tsp dried dill)
  • 1 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 tsp honey or maple syrup (optional, for a touch of sweetness)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Lemon wedges, for serving

Method

  1. Marinate the salmon:
In a small bowl, mix the olive oil, lemon zest, lemon juice, minced garlic, dill, parsley, honey (if using), salt, and pepper. Place the salmon fillets in a shallow dish and pour the marinade over them, making sure they’re well coated. Cover and let them marinate in the fridge for at least 20 minutes (or up to an hour if you have time).
  2. Preheat the grill:
If you’re using an outdoor grill, preheat it to medium-high heat. If you’re using a grill pan or oven grill, preheat it to 200°C (180°C fan).
  3. Grill the salmon:
Lightly oil the grill grates or pan to prevent sticking. Place the salmon fillets skin-side down (if they have skin) and grill for 4-5 minutes on each side, or until the salmon is cooked through and has beautiful grill marks. Be careful not to overcook it – salmon is best when it’s still slightly tender in the middle.
  4. Serve and enjoy:
Transfer the grilled salmon to a serving platter and garnish with extra fresh herbs and lemon wedges. Serve it with a side of steamed veggies, a fresh salad, or some fluffy rice for a complete Iftar meal.

Why This Recipe is Perfect for Iftar

  • Light yet satisfying: Salmon is rich in protein and healthy fats, making it a nourishing option for breaking your fast.
  • Quick and easy: It takes just 30 minutes to prepare, making it ideal for busy mums like me.
  • Packed with flavour: The zesty lemon and fragrant herbs add a burst of freshness that’s hard to resist.

Tips and Tricks

  • Switch up the herbs: If you don’t have dill or parsley, try using thyme, coriander, or even a sprinkle of paprika for a different twist.
  • Make it ahead: You can marinate the salmon in the morning and keep it in the fridge until you’re ready to grill.
  • Kid-friendly: My little ones love helping me mix the marinade and squeeze the lemon juice – it’s a fun way to get them involved in the kitchen.
