Professional Makeup Kit. What Should You Include? (A guide for artists)
I did a course that essentially provided me with a list of products I needed to get started in the industry. Over the years, products have changed and things have evolved. Especially the fact that I wanted to minimised my kit as I was lugging around so many unused products I just didn’t need. My back thanked me for it lol.
As a bridal hair and makeup artist, having a carefully curated kit is crucial for creating stunning looks that make brides feel beautiful on their big day. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting in the bridal makeup industry, ensuring your kit is filled with high-quality essentials is key to success.
So what should be in a makeup kit?
Being in the industry for over 15 years, I have created an amazing list of multi purpose products I use in my own kit! I’ve spent thousands on products over the years and have come to these staples for my minimalist kit. No more lugging around tonnes of unnecessary products that weigh a tonne and don’t even get used.

1. Foundation Range

Bridal makeup is all about achieving a flawless, natural look that lasts through tears, laughter, and dancing. A good range of foundations is essential to match different skin tones and types. Opt for long-wear, full-coverage foundations that can be layered for varying coverage levels. Having both liquid and powder options allows you to cater to different skin types and desired finishes. Don’t forget to include a variety of shades to ensure you can perfectly match any bride’s complexion.
The foundations I have selected have multipurpose. For example I love the way the MAC Full Coverage Cream Foundation can double up as a concealer. I personally love this foundation as it gives such a buttery, dreamy, full coverage finish.
For a more sheer base, I tend to reach for the Nars Sheer Glow Foundation which has a beautiful finish and is buildable for those areas that need that extra love.
A good high street brand, I love the Maybelline Superstay Activewear Foundation

2. Concealers and Colour Correctors

A reliable set of concealers is a must to cover blemishes, dark circles, and redness. In addition, colour correctors in shades like green (to neutralise redness), peach (to combat under-eye circles), and lavender (to brighten sallow skin) can make a huge difference in creating an even, radiant complexion. This ensures your bride looks her best from every angle, under every lighting condition.

3. High-Quality Brushes and Sponges

Investing in high-quality brushes and sponges is non-negotiable. A well-rounded brush set should include a foundation brush, blending brush, contour brush, and eyeshadow brushes of various sizes. Sponges, such as beauty blenders, are great for applying and blending foundation and concealer to achieve a seamless finish. Clean tools are crucial for hygiene and a professional finish, so always keep brush cleaner and extra sponges in your kit.
I have a variety of brushes from different price points. My MAC Cosmetics brushes have lasted so many years as I have looked after them well. But they come at a price! I also have a variety of affordable brands which I have listed below:

4. Eyeshadow Palettes

Eyeshadow is where you can let your creativity shine. A versatile palette with a range of neutral tones, alongside some shimmer and matte options, is essential for bridal looks. Brides typically prefer soft, romantic eyeshadow looks, but having a few bold colours on hand can help if the bride wants to add a pop of colour or go for a more dramatic look.
I have soooo many eyeshadow palettes and spent thousands on them; and have now come to the realisation that you don’t need that many. I have narrowed it down to 2 palettes which has all the colours I’ll need for any makeup look and the best part is that they are stunning shades, long lasting, so pigmented and so affordable!

5. Waterproof Mascara, Eyeliner and Brows

Weddings can be emotional, so waterproof mascara and eyeliner are absolute must-haves. Choose a mascara that adds volume and length without clumping, and an eyeliner that glides on smoothly for precise application. Whether your bride wants a classic winged liner or a subtle definition, waterproof formulas ensure longevity and tear-proof wear. I also use a range of either powder for the brows for a more subtle yet polished look, or a dip brow for a more defining, long lasting affect.
There is no need for expensive mascaras from my point of view. Eyeliner must be waterproof!

6. False Lashes and Adhesives

False lashes can add instant glamour and definition to any bridal makeup look. Stock a variety of lash styles, from natural to dramatic, to cater to different preferences. Be sure to include a high-quality, long-lasting adhesive to keep those lashes secure throughout the day. Individual lashes are also a great option for a more customized, natural look.
I have a variety of recommendations. From full strip lashes to natural lashes for the no makeup look!

7. Blushes and Bronzers

Blushes and bronzers are essential for adding warmth and dimension to the face. Choose a selection of blush shades, including soft pinks, peaches, and deeper tones to suit various skin tones. Bronzers can be used to add a sun-kissed glow or for contouring, so having both matte and shimmer options in your kit is ideal.
I have a variety of single pan blushers in a magnetic tin.

8. Highlighters

A good highlighter can give your bride that coveted bridal glow. Include both powder and cream highlighters in shades that suit different skin tones. Subtle champagne and rose gold shades work well for most complexions, but also consider having some bolder options for brides who want a more intense glow.
I chose a versatile glow kit with a variety of shades that can give you that amazing glow for all skin tones.

9. Lipsticks and Lip Liners

A variety of lipstick shades is essential to match the bridal theme and dress. Include a range of nudes, pinks, reds, and berries in both matte and glossy finishes. Lip liners in coordinating shades are also important for defining the lips and preventing feathering. Don’t forget to include a good lip balm to keep lips hydrated and smooth.
My kit contains mainly liquid lipsticks that last longer than traditional lipsticks and can be topped up with a tinted or clear gloss to give is a nice juicy shine.

10. Setting Spray and Powder

To ensure the makeup lasts all day, a setting spray and powder are crucial. A translucent powder helps to set the makeup and control shine without adding extra color or texture. Setting sprays help to lock in the makeup and provide a natural, dewy finish that lasts through the ceremony, photos, and reception.

Huda Beauty Easy Bake Loose Powder Pound Cake
MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural Powder
Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray

11. Sanitising Products

Hygiene is critical in makeup artistry, especially when working with different clients. Always have hand sanitizer, brush cleaner, and disposable applicators like mascara wands, lip brushes, and cotton swabs in your kit. These products help maintain cleanliness and prevent cross-contamination. I ALWAYS use a metal spatula and palette to work from and use disposable products where necessary such as mascara wands.

12. Skin Prep Essentials – Primers

A flawless makeup look starts with well-prepped skin. Include a range of skincare products like moisturizers, primers, eye creams, and hydrating mists to ensure the skin is smooth and ready for makeup. You may also want to have a few skincare options tailored to different skin types, such as mattifying primers for oily skin and hydrating primers for dry skin.
Editors picks:
MAC Prep + Prime Skin
MAC Prep + Prime Lip Primer
Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré
MAC Prep + Prime Essential Oils Grapefruit and Chamomile

13. Touch-Up Kit
Always have a touch-up kit ready for the bride to keep her looking fresh throughout the day. I include blotting papers, a small amount of setting powder, a mini version of the lipstick used, eyelash glue (this generally comes with the lashes I provide), disposable sponge, couple of plasters and a few safety pins just in case. I put them all into a handy little bag which can easily fit in any bag or pocket.
Providing this to the bride shows your attention to detail and commitment to ensuring she looks perfect from start to finish.
14. Bonus!
Other things in my kit that just make sense…
Portable fan (to help dry the lash glue and face after it has been sprayed with setting spray)
Inglot duraline (to revive dried products such as gel eyeliner)
And you’re all set!

Building the perfect bridal makeup kit is all about versatility, quality, and preparedness. By ensuring you have these essential items, you’ll be ready to handle any request and create beautiful, lasting looks for every bride on her special day. Invest in good products, keep your tools clean, and always stay updated on the latest trends to keep your skills sharp and your brides happy.
